UN Project 7980

Supporting Communities Through Wind Power

The UN-supported Burgos Wind project is helping to turn the tide on this negative environmental impact by providing the Philippines with a source of clean, renewable energy and stable employment for local communities.

  • Revolutionizing Energy

Recognizing the finite nature of these resources and their extensive environmental and health impacts, the Burgos Wind project, backed by the UN, is shifting the Philippines towards renewable energy.

  • The Burgos Wind Project

Located north of Manila in a prime Philippine region for clean wind energy, the Burgos Wind Project is one of Southeast Asia's largest wind farms with 50 turbines powering the National Grid, generating 370GWh of electricity and offsetting 200,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

  • Community Engagement and Empowerment

The team at the Burgos Wind Farm collaborates with local governments and communities on educational and protective environmental initiatives, hosts local radio programs on ecological health, and creates jobs during high unemployment periods.

Engaging and empowering the community is a critical objective of the project.

During its construction phase, the Burgos Wind Farm created numerous jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers, helping alleviate high unemployment rates. The farm continues to employ local community members and offers training through partnerships with universities and accredited facilities.

Additionally, the project supports the community during natural disasters. From 2000 to 2016, the Philippines suffered significant losses due to climate-related disasters, with typhoons striking about 20 times annually. The Burgos Wind Team collaborates with local government agencies to provide swift and effective responses, and conducts educational initiatives on disaster preparedness for typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.

Project Verification

The project is certified as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Additionally, Trade and Export Finance recognized the Burgos Wind Project as the "Best ECA (Export Credit Agency) backed Green Deal" and named it one of the "Top Ten Global Deals of 2015."
